Deliberate Practice

Simply playing a game repeatedly will only make you marginally better. To truly improve, you must engage in deliberate practice.

Analyze Your Losses

You learn very little from winning. When you lose, take a moment before starting the next game to identify exactly where the turning point occurred. Was it a bad bid in Spades? A greedy move in Connect 4? Identify the specific error.

Play Against Better Opponents

Iron sharpens iron. Look for opponents who challenge you. If you win 90% of your games, you are playing against the wrong people. Getting crushed by an expert is the fastest way to see what high-level play actually looks like.

Focus on One Mechanic at a Time

Instead of trying to win, enter a game with a specific learning goal. For example, "In this game of Connect 4, I am entirely focused on controlling the center column." You might lose because you ignored other threats, but you will master that specific mechanic much faster.
