About Spades
Spades is a trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other. All 52 cards are dealt, 13 to each player. Before play, everyone bids how many tricks they expect to win, and the two bids on a team are added together as the team's contract. Spades are always trump, so any spade beats any card of another suit.
You can start straight away against three computer players, or start a table and share the invite link. The host can give any empty seat to a computer player and move people between seats, so two friends can partner up against the computer, and if someone drops out the computer plays their seat until they are back. Seats one and three form one team against seats two and four. No download and no account.
Scoring follows the usual pattern. Make your contract and your team scores ten points for each trick bid, plus one point for each extra trick, known as a bag. Every ten bags costs the team 100 points, so overbidding and underbidding both hurt. Miss the contract and you lose ten points for each trick bid. A bid of zero, called nil, is scored on its own: 100 points if the nil bidder takes no tricks, minus 100 if they take any. The first team to reach 500 points wins.
Also known as Partnership Spades, Spades card game.
How to play
- 1Play the computer, or start a table, share the link and give any empty seats to computer players.
- 2Partners sit opposite: seats one and three play against seats two and four.
- 3Each player bids how many of the 13 tricks they expect to take, or nil for none.
- 4Follow the suit that was led if you can; if you cannot, play any card, including a spade.
- 5The highest spade wins the trick, or the highest card of the suit led if no spade was played.
- 6Spades cannot be led until one has been played, unless you hold nothing but spades.
- 7Make your team bid to score points; the first team to 500 wins.
Questions
- How many players do you need for Spades?
- Four, playing as two teams of two. Here the computer fills any empty seats, so you can play alone or with one to three friends.
- Can I play Spades online with friends?
- Yes. Start a table and share the invite link. The host can add computer players for any empty seats, so you do not need four people. It is free and needs no account.
- What are bags in Spades?
- Bags are tricks your team takes beyond its bid. Each one is worth a point, but every ten bags costs your team 100 points.
- What does it mean when spades are broken?
- Spades are broken once someone plays a spade on a trick led in another suit. Until then, nobody may lead a spade unless they have only spades left.
- How many points do you need to win Spades?
- 500. The first team to reach 500 points at the end of a hand wins the game. If both teams are tied at 500 or more, another hand is played.
