About Minesweeper
Minesweeper is a logic puzzle played on a grid of covered squares, some of which hide mines. Uncover a safe square and it shows a number: how many of its eight neighbors contain a mine. Put those numbers together and you can work out where the mines must be. Uncover every safe square without setting one off and you win.
You can play it here free in your browser on the three classic board sizes: Beginner (9x9 with 10 mines), Intermediate (16x16 with 40 mines) and Expert (30x16 with 99 mines). Mines are placed only after your first click, never on that square or next to it, so every game opens with a clear patch of the board instead of a coin flip.
Left-click uncovers a square, and right-click places or removes a flag where you think a mine is; on a phone, long-press the square or switch to Flag and tap it. Squares with no neighboring mines open up their surroundings automatically. A counter shows how many flags you have left, and the timer starts with your first click, so once the logic becomes second nature you can start chasing faster times on each difficulty.
Also known as Mines, Mine Sweeper, Classic Minesweeper.

Questions
- Is the first click always safe?
- Yes. Mines are placed after your first click, and never on that square or the eight around it, so you always start with an open area.
- What do the numbers in Minesweeper mean?
- A number tells you how many of the eight surrounding squares hide a mine. A blank square has no mines next to it, which is why its neighbors open automatically.
- How do I flag a mine?
- Right-click a covered square to place a flag and right-click it again to remove it. On a phone, long-press the square or switch to Flag mode and tap it. A flagged square cannot be uncovered by accident.
- Which difficulty should I start with?
- Start with Beginner, a 9x9 board with 10 mines. Intermediate is 16x16 with 40 mines, and Expert is 30x16 with 99 mines.
- Do you ever have to guess in Minesweeper?
- Sometimes. The boards are random, so now and then logic leaves two or more squares equally likely, usually near the end. Most of the board can be solved without guessing.
