About Sudoku

Sudoku is a number puzzle on a 9x9 grid divided into nine 3x3 boxes. Some squares start filled in, and your job is to fill the rest so that every row, every column and every box contains the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. There is no arithmetic involved, only logic: every number you place narrows down where the others can go.

Every game here is a fresh puzzle generated in your browser at one of four levels. Easy starts with 45 numbers already filled in, Medium with 35, Hard with 28 and Expert with just 22, so the higher levels need longer chains of reasoning. Pick a level, press New Game and start solving, with no account and nothing to install.

The tools are the ones regular solvers expect. Notes mode lets you pencil small candidate numbers into a square, and the N key toggles it. Numbers that clash in a row, column or box turn red, while a mistake counter and timer keep you honest. Hint fills in the correct number for the selected square. Use the on-screen number pad or your keyboard, with arrow keys to move around the grid.

Also known as Number Place, Su Doku, 9x9 Sudoku.

Questions

How many difficulty levels are there?
Four. Easy starts with 45 numbers given, Medium with 35, Hard with 28 and Expert with 22.
What is notes mode in Sudoku?
Notes mode lets you write small candidate numbers in a square instead of a final answer. Turn it on with the Notes button or the N key, and turn it off to enter a digit for real.
Does the game tell me when I make a mistake?
Yes. A number that clashes with another in the same row, column or box turns red, and the mistake counter goes up when a number does not match the solution.
What does the Hint button do?
Select an empty square and press Hint, and the correct number is filled in and locked.
Can I play Sudoku with the keyboard?
Yes. Type 1 to 9 to enter a number, use Backspace, Delete or 0 to clear a square, press N to toggle notes, and move around with the arrow keys.
