About Triangles
Triangles is a two-player strategy game built on the same idea as Dots and Boxes. The board is a 4x4 grid of sixteen dots. Players take turns drawing one line between two neighboring dots, across, down or diagonally. Draw the line that closes a small triangle and you claim it, score a point and take another turn. When every line has been drawn, the player with more triangles wins.
The diagonal lines are what make it different from Dots and Boxes. Each small square on the grid can be crossed by either diagonal, so it holds four overlapping triangles, each made of two sides of the square and one diagonal. That adds up to 36 triangles on the board, and a single line can finish more than one at once, which leaves plenty of room for chains and traps.
You can play Triangles here against the computer on Easy or Hard, with a friend taking turns on the same device, or online: start a table and send the invite link, and when a game ends you can both play again. It runs in the browser, free, with no download and no account.
Also known as Triangle Dots, Dots and Triangles, Dots and Lines.
How to play
- 1Choose Play the computer (Easy or Hard), a friend on this device, or Play with friends.
- 2On your turn, tap a faint line between two neighboring dots to draw it: across, down or diagonally.
- 3If your line completes a triangle, you claim it and score a point.
- 4Completing a triangle gives you another turn; otherwise play passes to your opponent.
- 5Avoid drawing the second line of a triangle, which leaves the third line for your opponent.
- 6When all lines are drawn, the player with the most triangles wins.
Questions
- How is Triangles different from Dots and Boxes?
- In Dots and Boxes you draw only horizontal and vertical lines and close squares. In Triangles you can also draw diagonals, and you score by closing small triangles instead.
- How many triangles are on the board?
- Thirty-six. The 4x4 grid of dots has nine small squares, and each one contains four triangles made of two of its sides and one diagonal.
- Do you get another turn after completing a triangle?
- Yes. Whenever your line completes at least one triangle, you claim it and draw again.
- Can I play Triangles against the computer?
- Yes. On Hard the computer completes any triangle it can, avoids setting one up for you, and gives away as little as possible when it has to. Easy sometimes draws a random line.
- Can I play Triangles online with a friend?
- Yes. Choose Play with friends, start a table and send the invite link. Your friend can also join with the table code, and you can play again when the game ends.
