About Spit

Spit is a real-time card game: nobody takes turns, and the quickest player wins. Each player lays out five stacks of one, two, three, four and five cards, and the rest of their half of the deck becomes a spit pile. Two cards start face up in the middle, and both players race to play cards that are one higher or one lower than either center card, in any suit.

On LetsPlayCards.Online you play Spit against a computer opponent that keeps playing while you think, set to Relaxed, Normal or Fast. Tap the top card of any of your stacks to play it; if it fits both center piles, tap the pile you want. Aces and Kings connect, so Queen, King, Ace, Two is a legal run. When neither of you can move, press Spit to turn a fresh card from each spit pile onto the center. Whoever clears their stacks first takes the smaller center pile, and a new round is dealt.

Spit is often confused with Speed, and the two are close relatives. In Speed, popular in the US, each player holds a hand of five cards and refills it from a personal draw pile, with spare side stacks turned over when play stalls. Spit lays its cards out on the table in stacks instead, and that is the version played here. Both reward the same skill: spotting the next play a moment before your opponent.

Also known as Slam, Spit card game.

How to play

  1. 1Each side gets half the deck: five stacks of one to five cards, plus a spit pile with the rest.
  2. 2Press Spit to start the round, then tap the top card of one of your stacks to play it on a center pile.
  3. 3A card fits if it is one higher or one lower than the center card, in any suit; Ace and King connect.
  4. 4Play as fast as you can, because the computer plays at the same time.
  5. 5When nobody can play, press Spit to flip a new card from each spit pile onto the center.
  6. 6Clear your stacks first to take the smaller center pile; the player who gets rid of every card wins.

Questions

Is Spit the same as Speed?
No, but they are close relatives. Both are real-time games of playing cards one up or one down onto two center piles. In Speed you hold a hand of five cards; in Spit, the version on this site, your cards are laid out in five stacks.
Can you play an Ace on a King in Spit?
Yes. Ranks wrap around here, so an Ace can go on a King or a Two, and a King can go on an Ace or a Queen.
Do suits matter in Spit?
No. Only the rank counts: a card can go on any center card one higher or one lower.
What happens when nobody can play?
Press Spit and a new card from each spit pile is turned onto the center piles. The computer calls Spit itself if you wait.
How fast does the computer play?
You choose: Relaxed, Normal or Fast. On Normal it makes a play a little under once a second.
